Colonial Williamsburg Engagement Session

Richard + Meridyth’s Colonial Williamsburg Engagement Session

A Colonial Williamsburg engagement session is always beautiful, but Richard and Meridyth’s evening at the Governor’s Palace was something extra special! This session was actually a reschedule from a very rainy day, and I am SO glad we decided to wait for the sun to peek out. It was absolutely worth it because these photos are stunning!

And these two? Absolute naturals in front of the camera.

Richard and Meridyth are such a sweet, beautiful couple, and photographing them together was such a joy. They were comfortable, playful, and genuinely just so easy to photograph. I love when a couple settles into a session and simply enjoys being together because those are always the moments that create some of my favorite images.

And can we talk about Meridyth’s gorgeous red hair and fair skin?! Against the historic architecture and greenery of Colonial Williamsburg, it photographed so beautifully. Add in that gorgeous light, and this entire session felt romantic and timeless.

Engagement Photos at the Governor’s Palace in Colonial Williamsburg

Colonial Williamsburg was the perfect location for Richard and Meridyth because this area is especially meaningful to them. I always love when couples choose an engagement session location that isn’t simply beautiful, but actually holds significance in their story.

The Governor’s Palace and the surrounding areas of Colonial Williamsburg offer so much variety for engagement photography. Between the historic architecture, beautiful gardens, tree-lined paths, brick walkways, and all of the character Williamsburg is known for, there are so many beautiful places to stop and photograph.

There is also something wonderfully timeless about this part of Virginia. It lends itself perfectly to engagement photographs that feel romantic and classic rather than overly trendy—images that I hope Richard and Meridyth will still absolutely love decades from now.

Next Stop: Their April Wedding!

Richard and Meridyth will be getting married next April at the Manor House at King’s Charter, and after spending this evening with them, I am even more excited to photograph their wedding day!

Engagement sessions are such a wonderful opportunity for me to spend time with my couples before the wedding. We get to laugh, get comfortable working together, and take away so much of the pressure of being photographed. By the time the wedding day arrives, being together in front of my camera already feels familiar.

Richard and Meridyth certainly didn’t need much practice, though. They were naturals from the very beginning!

I am so thankful we waited out that rainy weather and held onto our vision for this session. The sunshine was worth the wait, and I couldn’t be happier with the beautiful images we created together.

Richard and Meridyth, thank you both for such a wonderful evening and for allowing me to be a part of your Colonial Williamsburg Engagement Session! I loved getting to spend this time with you and photograph the two of you in a place that means so much to you. You were an absolute joy to have in front of my camera, and I cannot wait to celebrate with you again in April at the Manor House at King’s Charter!

Colonial Williamsburg Engagement Session FAQ

Is Colonial Williamsburg a good location for engagement photos?

Absolutely! Colonial Williamsburg is one of my favorite locations for engagement photos in Williamsburg, Virginia. The historic buildings, gardens, brick pathways, beautiful trees, and classic architecture give couples a huge variety of backdrops within one area. It is especially beautiful for couples who want their engagement photographs to feel romantic and timeless.

Can you take engagement photos at the Governor’s Palace?

The Governor’s Palace and surrounding Colonial Williamsburg area provide a gorgeous historic backdrop for engagement portraits. Because photography rules, access, hours, and permit requirements can change, I always recommend checking current Colonial Williamsburg guidelines when planning your session.

What is the best time of day for a Colonial Williamsburg engagement session?

I generally love photographing engagement sessions later in the day when the light becomes softer and more flattering. The exact start time depends on the season and sunset time. Richard and Meridyth’s session is a perfect example of why beautiful light can make such a difference—we rescheduled because of rain, and waiting for a better weather day gave us the gorgeous light you see in these photographs.

What should we wear for Colonial Williamsburg engagement photos?

I recommend choosing outfits that complement the historic, timeless feel of Colonial Williamsburg without feeling like you’re trying to match the location. Neutral tones, soft colors, classic silhouettes, and a slightly elevated look photograph beautifully here. Most importantly, you should still feel like yourselves!

What happens if it rains on the day of our engagement session?

Virginia weather doesn’t always cooperate, and that’s okay! If the forecast looks like it could significantly affect the experience or the photographs we’re hoping to create, we can talk through our options. Sometimes rescheduling is absolutely worth it—as it certainly was for Richard and Meridyth!

Do you photograph weddings and engagement sessions in Williamsburg, Virginia?

Yes! Vinluan Photography photographs weddings and engagement sessions throughout Williamsburg, Virginia, Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia Beach, Hampton Roads, and beyond. I love helping couples choose locations that not only photograph beautifully but also feel meaningful to them.
